Role Purpose

Research Analysts are a vital part of Wood Mackenzie and this role will play a significant part in our Coal research. The successful applicant will assist in forecasting market demand, supply, costs and prices for the coal industry. They will run our in-house cost model, author insightful reports, and give presentations to our diverse internal and external client base. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to contribute to our Iron Ore & Steel, Power and Power & Renewables businesses.

A creative approach and ability to self-start will be essential to deliver success in the role. 

Main Responsibilities

  • Conducting primary and secondary proprietary research on the coal/iron ore/steel industries.
  • Drawing upon your expertise, make a real contribution to the development and production of WoodMac’s Energy and mining  products from day one. 
  • Develop relationships with research contacts and clients to enhance our offerings. A high level of interaction with external industry contacts is expected.
  • Reviewing, prioritizing and analysing data and information to produce quantitative and qualitative in-depth reports of the highest quality.
  • Responding to client enquiries and ad hoc requests in a timely and professional manner, and supporting the initiatives undertaken by Wood Mackenzie’s sales and marketing team.
  • Responding to media requests for phone or in-person interviews as required
  • Updating our internal cost models for assigned commodities.
  • Authoring ad-hoc reports that provide additional insight to our clients.
  • Leading product demo sessions with clients and prospects, working closely with sales and account management to develop new business and secure renewals.
  • Participating and presenting at Wood Mackenzie forums and external industry conferences and events, promoting the Wood Mackenzie brand.
  • Work collaboratively with the Power and Gas teams on our integrated long-term outlook.
  • Making a real and valid contribution to the team with your ideas, enthusiasm and commitment to excellence .
  • Provide regional expertise for consulting assignments.


Knowledge & Experience

  • Minimum of Bachelors degree in a relevant discipline such as mining engineering, geophysics, geology, mineral economics, energy finance, etc.
  • The ideal candidate will have 5+ years relevant work experience within the coal, iron ore, or steel industries, or similar fields such as market/competitor intelligence
  • Advanced problem solving and analytical skills
  • Financial modelling abilities, with high attention to detail.
  • Experience with VBA and one common data science toolkit such as R or Python is helpful.
  • An understanding of the needs and expectations of our clients and the ability to meet these expectations
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills, coupled with the confidence and presentation skills necessary to present your findings to senior clients and staff
  • The ability to work as part of a team and a willingness to make a real contribution
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills as well as the ability to manage your own workload
