Role Title: Principal / Senior Research Analyst – Environment

Reports to: Head of Environment and Climate Change, Research

Location: Bath / London / New York

Role Purpose

Verisk Maplecroft’s Environment & Climate Change research team is responsible for developing the company’s qualitative and quantitative analysis and global forecasts relating to risks associated with environmental regulation, natural capital, natural hazards and climate change. The team works closely with Verisk Maplecroft’s analytics, human rights, consulting, and politics teams on products and analysis relevant to international operators and investors.

The Principal / Senior Research Analyst - Environment will be a senior figure within the team, taking the lead in generating clear and concise, in-depth, forward-looking analysis of environmental developments in key regions, using a combination of qualitative and quantitative research skills. The analyst will collaborate with our regional politics teams to develop assessments of the social and governance factors affecting environmental trends and developments. As a specialist in the field of environmental risks, the Principal / Senior Research Analyst - Environment will provide leadership and coaching for more junior analysts within the team to develop their analytical and communication skills.

The analyst will also work closely with the wider Environment & Climate Change team and Verisk Maplecroft’s sector leads to produce industry-relevant analysis on cross-cutting issues such as climate risk. Other workstreams will include input to the development and production of Verisk Maplecroft’s suite of over 45 environmental risk indices.

Candidates [OD1] [HR2] from a variety of fields may be suitable for this role, including: EIA/SEA, socio-economic impact assessment, sustainability consultancy, climate science, earth science, environmental journalism and environmental management.


Main Responsibilities
  • Maintain thematic expertise in the details of activity, events and trends in environmental and climate change risks globally.
  • Produce forward-looking briefings and insights on environmental events and trends globally and their impact on the interests of Verisk Maplecroft’s clients
  • Engage directly with clients to provide quantitative and qualitative analysis on environmental issues of relevance to commercial operators, investors and other stakeholders
  • Contribute to the production and reviewing of Verisk Maplecroft’s environmental indices in accordance with our methodologies and procedures
  • Work with colleagues from other research teams and Verisk Maplecroft’s consultancy team to produce insightful global analysis and products
  • Lead on the scoping, project management and delivery of specific projects where required
  • Provide peer review of content, including responsibility for final approval for client delivery
  • Develop a network of external sources and contacts to maintain currency on client needs and industry developments
  • Build a profile with both internal and external audiences as an influential, expert contributor within a particular discipline or specialism
  • Identify opportunities to improve existing content or products and provide innovative ideas and solutions to meet the requirements of clients
  • Consolidate and strengthen Verisk Maplecroft’s thought leadership on environmental risks and opportunities, including through the production of high quality written analysis and presentations at external conferences or webinars
  • Respond to routine press enquiries on environmental issues
  • Support members of the Verisk Maplecroft sales teams with business development activities as a representative of the Environment & Climate Change research team
  • Support coaching, knowledge-sharing, growth and skills development of more junior team members


Knowledge & Experience
  • A Master’s or Doctorate degree in an environmental science, climate change, or other relevant fields is preferred
  • At least 5 years of professional experience in a relevant field is preferred, particularly environmental regulation, environmental assessment, environmental risk analysis or consultancy
  • A well-developed understanding of environmental risk and opportunities as they pertain to business, including associated regulatory and social issues. A sound understanding of how these relate to the extractive and financial industries in particular would be advantageous
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Robust quantitative skills and a good understanding of using spatial data. A moderate to high degree of competence in Excel is preferred; experience in data visualisation, geographic information systems (GIS), and proficiency with statistical techniques will be a distinct advantage
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including proficiency in compiling and delivering presentations
  • Excellent written and spoken English, particularly in relation to analytical writing
  • Project management experience is preferred
  • Organisational and planning skills and the ability to work independently
  • An ability to thrive in an environment where peer reviewing is robust
