Team Profile


This role will serve as part of the Americas power and renewables team, with a focus on power market fundamental analysis.  We help clients forecast supply, demand, and power prices utilizing market simulation tools and models.  And guide them on strategic issues confronting the entire energy industry including strategic planning, asset valuation, operations forecasts, and impact on energy commodity demand.



Role Purpose 


The Senior Analyst will be responsible for running advanced power market simulation models to forecast electricity prices and asset values.  The ability to customize the models to meet clients needs, and interpret the results into meaningful insight are crucial.  The Senior analyst must also have a strong knowledge of power market design, structure and current issues for one or several of the United States power markets.


Main Responsibilities


Power Market and Modeling expertise

  • Experience working with Power Dispatch Models
    • Working knowledge of running dispatch models like Aurora, PROMOD etc.
    • Ability to independently lead power market modelling studies
    • Detailed understanding data inputs, and ability to interpret outputs
  • Regional Power market expertise
    • Demonstrate the ability to understand fundamentals and regulatory aspects of 1 or more markets, WECC, PJM, MISO, or Canadian knowledge may be a plus
  • Demonstrated expertise in at least 1 or 2 emerging industry trends or policy
    • Solar and wind technologies storage / batteries, transports (EVs/DG),  distributed generation, retail and wholesale market pricing, rate structures, market design, grid edge or smart grid technologies
  • Experience doing power plant valuations (gas plants, wind, solar, solar + storage)
    • Calculate and/or forecast EBITDA, NPV, ROE for different technology types
  • Utility knowledge
    • Rate base design
    • Operations/ Plant design
  • Lead other internal modelling tasks / efforts / initiatives
    • Including Statistical and financial models

Ability to work and contribute across various business functions

  • Work directly with the consulting team on customized projects for clients
  •  Work closely with other commodity teams  (natural gas, coal, oils, macroeconomics)

Knowledge & Experience


The successful candidate will extensive experience in a utility or consulting company running power dispatch models and analysing power markets.
  •  At least 3 years running detailed power dispatch models (Aurora preferred, PROMOD, etc)
  • At least 5 years US power market analysis
  • Proficient using Excel/Access, Word/PPT
  • Experience writing and presenting analytical forecasts to senior stakeholders and clients
  • Working knowledge of one or more languages like SQL, VBA, R/STATA or similar        
  • Work well under tight deadlines
  • Dynamic and ability to multi-task
  • Quantitative degree in Engineering, Finance, or economics preferred
