Job Title: Research Analyst, Unconventional Play Service

Reports to: Senior VP Sub-Surface, Tom Wilker

Role Purpose

The key part of the role is valuing the performance of unconventional plays and companies using Wood Mackenzie's unique methodology. The role-holder would be part of a team spread around the globe and expected to contribute to the continuous update cycle. The area of focus would be the Americas but coverage of other regions would be required periodically.

Main Responsibilities
  • Analyze unconventional plays and basins from a perspective of value creation through exploration.
  • Understand and describe the drivers of exploration value from a historical perspective, including exploration spend, success rates, the commerciality of discoveries, development costs and market constraints.
  • Build yet-to-find resource estimates through creaming curve analysis and forecasting 20-year activity levels, success rates and discovery sizes.
  • Build prospect economic models using Wood Mackenzie's bespoke GEM models and the Costor tool used by the Unconventional Play Service group.
  • Understand and describe company exploration strategies and performance, including both conventional and unconventional exploration.
  • Work with regional upstream and corporate teams for input to building basin and company analysis and reports.
  • Work with regional Americas upstream teams to contribute to and author exploration-focused regional Insights and Informs, and work with the global Unconventional Play Service group to contribute to and author global, themed Exploration Insights.
  • Respond to client questions and queries on all unconventional play related reports and tools. Be able to demonstrate how Unconventional Play Service offerings deliver value to the client.
  • Assist with consultancy projects as needed.

Knowledge & Experience Required 
  • Experience in the industry, and preferably will have a background in petroleum geosciences.
  • A knowledge of petroleum economics is desirable.
  • Numeracy and the ability to write concise copy are essential.
  • Minimum of Bachelor's degree in related field.
