Reports to: Vice President

Role Purpose

Wood Mackenzie, a leading advisor to the energy industry seeks a Principal for its Analytics Lab group, with this role based in Houston, Texas.  The selected candidate will focus on collaborating with clients to discover significant sources of business value through the use of new data and analytic techniques. 

Principal responsibilities will include scoping the Lab’s research agenda with clients, facilitating experimental design, collecting and preparing datasets for analysis, managing Lab projects, developing quality work products, and communicating Lab results.  Achieving results will hinge on an ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across organizations and stakeholder groups, developing creative solutions to new problems, and leveraging the expertise and talents of Wood Mackenzie and the wider Verisk company group. 

The position requires an analytical mindset, a commercial perspective, and the ability to transform data into insight. Successful candidates will be creative thinkers, quantitatively astute, and solutions oriented.  In addition to strong interpersonal qualities, candidates will have demonstrated written and verbal skills.

Main Responsibilities


  • Client Engagement – lead and support the development of scopes of projects, facilitate alignment across stakeholder groups, implement a course of action and deliver to plan
  • Resource management – organize and efficiently deploy project teams and IP resources, including team members from client organizations
  • Project management – develop a course of action and deliver to plan, maintain visibility into progress for all stakeholders
  • Business development– identify and pursue opportunities for the Lab to deliver value to clients, recruit client study groups

Knowledge and Experience Required

  • Bachelor's degree in economics, business or engineering, or mathematics field
  • At least 6 years of upstream industry experience
  • Strategic and commercial consulting experience
  • Project Management experience  
  • Demonstrated analytical roles and skillsets
  • Strategy and commercial mindset
  • Understand fundamental analysis and its use in energy markets
  • Familiarity and experience collecting, manipulating, and analyzing fundamental industry data sources and data types
  • Be current on industry trends and issues
  • Collaborate with colleagues and project teams in scope planning
  • Identify and access internal and external information
  • Deploy models and other Woodmac IP as appropriate
  • Bring client and industry insights to project deliverables
  • Write and edit quality reports and presentations
  • Strong communication skills
  • Build rapport with clients and project teams
  • Support and lead production of Thought Leadership material
  • Data Science skills and experience a plus
