Role Purpose

Data Associates are a vital part of Wood Mackenzie and this role will play a significant part in our Coal research. The successful applicant will assist in forecasting market demand, supply, costs and prices for the coal industry. They will run our in-house cost model, author insightful reports, and give presentations to our diverse internal and external client base. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to contribute to our Iron Ore & Steel, Power and Renewables businesses.

A creative approach and ability to self-start will be essential to deliver success in the role. 

Main Responsibilities
  • Conduct primary and secondary proprietary research on the coal industry
  • Develop relationships with research contacts and clients to enhance our offerings
  • Co-author regional and asset level reports on the major coal producing basins
  • Update our internal cost models for assigned coal basins
  • Author ad-hoc reports that provide additional insight to our clients
  • Maintain data and systems used to deliver content to clients and/or internal stakeholders
  • Execute the operation of business processes including data gathering, collation and formatting
  • Understand the implications of system changes, tools and processes that are used in the team, and the impact of making changes for internal stakeholders and clients
  • Create and maintain the documentation of data processes, databases, data tools and models, according to policies, procedure and best practices
  • Follow set procedures to complete regular data processes and analysis, ensuring completeness, accuracy and integrity of data
  • Collect and compile industry data on a regular basis from various sources to maintain and supplement our data platform
  • Create new ways to visualize and analyze our data for both internal tools and commercial products
  • Form a good understanding of data domain, business activities and client requirements from the organization's products and services
  • Ensure integrity of our own sourced data
  • Develop new processes to improve the transformation and curation of our data
  • Develop good working relationships with research and data colleagues to provide data support or process changes

Knowledge & Experience
  • Minimum of bachelor's degree required in related field of study
  • Experience in working with data and demonstrate an affinity with numbers
  • Understanding of how web scraping methods can be implemented
  • Additional skills desired but not required include: Python, R, VBA, Kapow, XML, HTML, JSON, C#, ArcGIS, SQL, AWS
  • An understanding of the coal industry would be advantageous
  • Experience of using MS Office Suite including Excel
  • Understanding of data visualisation tools (such as Spotfire, PowerBI, Tableau)
