Verisk’s Law Department is looking to hire a talented Counsel to help with a wide range of general corporate matters with a particular focus on drafting and negotiating commercial contracts, mergers & acquisitions, and international cross-border transactions.

This position is based in our Jersey City, NJ office, conveniently located across the street from the Newport path station.  Just one stop from Christopher Street, we’re an easy 10-minute commute from lower Manhattan (and about 20 minutes from Brooklyn).

Role Overview

As Counsel, you will be an integral member of the legal team coordinating with internal stakeholders including management, business units and sales.  The successful role holder will be responsible for identifying and advising on legal risks and contractual issues and interpreting, drafting and negotiating agreements with third-parties, including customers, vendors and consultants.  The successful role holder also will provide legal support for mergers and acquisitions and coordinate with outside counsel and internal business development teams in connection with all stages of M&A transactions, including due diligence and negotiating and reviewing the terms of the definitive and ancillary agreements.  As directed by the General Counsel and the Associate General Counsel, you’ll have the ability to work on, or spearhead the legal efforts for various additional projects. 

While challenging, this will also be enormously interesting, fun and allow you to witness the real-time impact that you have on both Verisk’s business plan and its success.

Necessary Qualifications For Success

• You have an undergraduate degree and a JD degree from a top school; Admission to New Jersey Bar (or Admission to Other State Bar with NJ Limited License for In-House Counsel)

• You will have at least 6 years of combined relevant legal experience; experience at a law firm is strongly preferred

• You have strong corporate law and transactional experience with deep expertise in drafting and negotiating commercial contracts and experience with mergers and acquisitions; international and cross-border experience a plus.  

• You have a keen understanding and interest in intellectual property, data privacy and security issues, particularly as it relates to data analytics.

• Insurance industry experience a plus

• You are an effective negotiator with a good sense for practical business solutions to problems.

• You are self-assured and comfortable handling matters independently

• You are energetic with a dynamic personality and can inspire the confidence of the business team, management, departmental colleagues and other support groups

• You have excellent negotiation, drafting, analytical, verbal and written communication skills

• You are extremely well-organized and have excellent attention to detail

• You effectively prioritize and manage multiple matters in a timely manner

• You have the ability and desire to work both collaboratively and autonomously

• You are able to travel as required (expected travel is less than 10%)
